Amazon planning drone delivery for 2015

02 December 2013/Categories: Industry News

Online retail giant Amazon has unveiled plans for an unmanned delivery system to be implemented as early as 2015.

Entitled Amazon Prime Air, the service will feature remote aerial vehicles to deliver goods within 30 minutes of ordering.

The company states the aerial vehicles are built with public safety as a top priority, adding multiple redundancies into the design, which will also meet commercial aviation standards.

Initially, Prime Air will be available in the US, following approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. If such drone technology is to be used in the future, air regulations may become a complicated area, as such vehicles may need to apply for the right to operate within commercial airspace.

This could limit where the service can deliver to as, for instance, airports could be quite difficult to plan routes through, due to the highly controlled restrictions and heavy traffic already present.

However, Amazon is not the only distributor to think of utilising drone technology. Australian company Zookal is looking to use similar vehicles to deliver its books in the near future.
