Crossrail 'one of the greenest builds'

26 November 2013/Categories: Industry News

Crossrail has claimed to be one of the most sustainable builds, using technology to cut back on emissions.

According to its latest sustainability report, the development is bringing particle reduction methods to the construction sector. The firm itself is using diesel emission control technology on more than 56 per cent of the machinery over its 45 worksites.

Furthermore, it argues the project is helping to increase both jobs and skills within the sector, as its tunnelling academy is training 3,500 people, while supporting around 55,000 UK jobs.

Chief executive for Crossrail Andrew Wolstenholme said: "Crossrail is delivering a lasting legacy beyond a sustainable railway. We are creating a new generation of construction workers and tunnellers with skills that will set them up for life."

The project, which recently finished its first full-length tunnel, has sent one million tonnes of excavated earth to the Royal Society for the Protection of Bird's nature reserve at Wallasea Island, Essex. Roughly four million tonnes will be moved there and, to save on movements, these are being transported by rail and ship, which is more efficient than smaller lorries.
