£10.5m improvements for Welsh line

28 August 2013/Categories: Industry News

Work is underway to update the rail system between Shrewsbury and Wrexham as part of a £10.5 million investment.

Rails are being realigned to allow for smoother, quieter journeys. Work will mostly be conducted in the evening and weekends to minimise disruption, although a nine-day line closure is planned.

Route managing director for Network Rail West Mark Langman said: "All of these investments will deliver a real improvement to passengers with the potential for quicker and more frequent journeys on a network that is more resilient and reliable".

Mr Langman also stated there was potential for more fast and frequent services on the network as a result of the investments.

The next modernisation step will be to between Newport and Shrewsbury, improving signalling and control systems. This, and similar work between Fflint to Llandudno, will start in 2015.

Other work includes improving station facilities, bridges, the River Severn viaduct and the 165-year old Cefn viaduct.

The work programme will be finished by the end of September 2013.
