New driving laws take effect today

16 August 2013/Categories: Industry News

New legislation that gives transport police greater power to fine careless drivers takes effect today (August 16th).

Fixed £100 penalties can now be issued to motorists who are caught hogging the middle lane and tailgating the vehicle in front.

Logistics company bosses will no doubt have briefed their employees on how to stay on the right side of the law since the government announced the reforms in June. With many delivery firms still finding trading conditions very challenging, the last thing they need is for their drivers to start accruing fines.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued some advice to ensure motorists are always showing due care and attention.

It has warned people against overtaking on the inside lane, skipping red lights and tuning a radio while driving.

IAM chief executive Simon Best hopes the police will not abuse their new powers.

"If it just becomes another numbers game with thousands of careless driving tickets issued, then the impact will be limited," he remarked.
