Why ecommerce has forced delivery firms to up their game

The ecommerce boom has given logistics companies little choice but to alter the way they deliver goods to customers. 


With more people ordering products from their smartphones and media tablets, fleet operators have come under increasing pressure to transport items across the country as quickly as possible.


According to a new study by iForce, delivery charges are falling despite the fact more consumers are ordering goods online.


The average standard fee has dropped by £1.33 to £3.43 since November 2012.


To cut down on deliveries, many retailers are encouraging customers to fetch their own items from their stores after paying for them via the web. Indeed, the report highlighted a sharp upturn in "Click and Collect" activity, with 54 per cent of businesses now offering such services.


Geoff Taylor, iForce director of client services, said: "Click and Collect is still continuing to grow at pace and the new on-demand style of shopping is showing a continued trend in the online shoppers' week."
