Network Rail plots future transport expansion

04 July 2013/Categories: Industry News

Network Rail has put together a plan that outlines innovative ways to enhance the nation's transport network in the future.

The company has published its 'alternative solutions' strategy, which identifies five methods for expanding the country's options.

These include tram trains, new ideas for electrification, the development of community rail initiatives, tram trains and hybrid light rail.

Greater use of bus rapid transit, guided bus and personal rapid transit systems is also a possibility.

Network Rail has been challenged by the Office of Rail Regulation to enhance the reliability of the nation's public transport offerings, while at the same time extending services in order to cater for rising population figures.

Paul Plummer, Network Rail's group strategy director, said it is important the organisation is open to different suggestions on how to improve the UK's transport network.

"To maintain the mandate to further invest in our railway, the industry has to demonstrate a clear commitment to greater efficiency and cost effectiveness," he commented.
